Alcohol Metabolism and Liver Rate
Understanding alcohol metabolism is key to interpreting your results. After drinking, ethanol is absorbed through the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream, peaking within 30โ90 minutes depending on stomach fullness and drink strength. The liver then processes the ethanol via the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), converting it to acetaldehyde and eventually to harmless acetic acid.
The average liver rate of alcohol elimination is roughly 0.015โ0.020% BAC per hour (about one standard drink per hour for most adults). This rate is largely fixed by your liver's enzyme capacity โ it cannot be significantly sped up by coffee, exercise, or cold water.
Individual differences in alcohol metabolism stem from genetic variation in ADH enzymes, body composition, age, and sex. Women generally have lower total body water and higher body fat percentage than men of equal weight, resulting in higher peak BAC from the same dose.
Scientific Methodology

Why does alcohol affect men and women differently?
Women generally reach a higher BAC than men after the same number of drinks due to differences in alcohol metabolism and body composition.
